How to help a child with homework in English?

Should a parent help a student with his English homework?

Parents' opinions on this issue differ: some believe that it is necessary to “sit with the child for lessons,” others hire tutors or rely on extended school hours, others believe that independence in a child can be developed only when the child does all the homework himself.

What do teachers and methodologists say?

WHY DO YOU NEED A HOMEWORK

To understand what are the functions of a parent when doing homework, let's see why teachers generally give a child homework assignments. Of course, first of all, homework is needed to consolidate the material passed in class. When learning a foreign language, doing homework will greatly speed up the process of mastering the language. Doing a few exercises to make your use of grammatical material automatic, or to learn new words, or to “train your ear” in listening exercises - all this should be done at home, and the more the better. At the same time, homework plays another important role. For the teacher, the successfully completed homework indicates that the child has mastered the material well and can move on to new, more complex topics. And homework, completed with mistakes, shows that it is necessary to sort out the questions that have arisen so that difficulties do not accumulate and discourage the child from learning the language.

What if the homework is not done or is completely done by another person? Failure to comply with the DZ greatly slows down the process of mastering the language in individual lessons. And an increase in the number of classes in the program is an extra material cost for parents. In group lessons, not doing your homework is practically a crime! After all, you must admit that classmates should not suffer if one child did not have time for homework . Well, the constant "not ready for the lesson" will inevitably lead to the failure of the child in the classroom, and therefore the unwillingness to attend them and generally study the language. Sometimes, of course, you can apply for essay help in English in order to alleviate problems, but it is better to still try to do everything yourself.

WHAT A PARENT CAN DO

So, you must do your homework! How can you help your child in this work? Teachers from various schools of foreign languages agree that the parent's function when doing homework in English is organizing and controlling! Our teachers give children feasible homework assignments. Does this mean tasks should be easy and snap like nuts? Not. It is normal if some of the tasks are difficult. After all, as you know, there is no progress without difficulties! The child is required to try and complete all the tasks. And from the parent - to organize the implementation, that is, to provide the child with the following conditions:

  1.               a sufficient amount of time during daylight hours, when the child has a little rest from school
  2.                a normal workplace where the child will not be distracted by foreign objects or noise,
  3.                access to audio assignments (which are available in all our courses without exception).

If EACH of these conditions is met, then the child is much easier to complete the tasks!

The controlling function of the parent is equally important. After each session, make sure the child knows what is being asked. If he does not know, the teacher duplicates the task in the parent's personal account. And be sure to control the fact of completing EVERY homework. You don't need to check for errors! This is the task of the teacher. But it is the parent's task to control the child's readiness for each lesson.

If your child complains that he doesn’t know or understands his homework, you can help him by asking the essay assistant for clarification of the assignment to help him with his English homework https://essayassistant.org/english-homework-help/.

If the child is experiencing language difficulties and asks you for help, then you need to figure out what exactly these difficulties are connected with. For example, some children have a habit of asking for help. That is, the child himself does not make efforts to cope with the task, because he is used to the fact that the mother will explain what to do and how to do it. It is here that there is fertile ground for the development of independence in a child. Talk to him, explain that he can be successful without your help, that he has everything to develop independence. Let him try to figure it out for himself, and you do not be indifferent to his small successes, praise.

If the child tries to deal with the task himself, but it does not work out and he asks the parent for help, do not refuse. Show your child that he can count on you in difficult situations . But please, if you are not competent enough in a foreign language, you do not need to teach your child instead of a teacher. If you teach incorrectly, then either the teacher's authority in the eyes of the child or your authority will suffer as a result. In such a situation, it is better to warn the child that you can be mistaken, since the language has been studied for a long time and has been forgotten, for example.

In no case should you impose your help on a child! It is IMPORTANT that the child does the homework by himself.

SUMMARY

You can help your child with homework, but the help should be meaningful and selective. You do not need to study with him or instead of him. Better come to English courses, there you will be provided with your homework.
